We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do!

Spirit Photograph

Spirit Photograph

Now on view is a recently acquired nineteenth-century spirit photograph by William Mumler (1832-1884), the foremost American practitioner of commercial spirit photography. This spirit photograph is the first of its kind in the Ackland collection.

The centerpiece of the exhibition Adding to the Mix 8, Mumler's carte-de-visite advertises the clairvoyant and healing abilities of the photographer's wife and assistant, Hannah, and claims that she is shown with her "controlling spirit." The photo is presented with paintings and prints from the Ackland's collection in which artists of various media and cultures have attempted to visualize the indescribable forces purported to make up other planes of being.
