“Fiercely tense and emotionally resonant.” The Telegraph (UK)
Luminous tenor Ian Bostridge returns to Memorial Hall with an outstanding British cast alongside the Britten Sinfonia and Britten Sinfonia Voices in composer Benjamin Britten’s unforgettable church parable Curlew River. Inspired by the ritualized drama of Japanese Noh theater, Britten explores themes of community, suffering and redemption in an intriguing encounter between Japanese aesthetic and medieval mystery play, the whole shot through with mysterious and exotic music. Multimedia director and video artist Netia Jones’ haunting projections and ethereal staging distill the work to its essential contrasting elements: black and white, sound and silence, darkness and light, grief and enlightenment. We take great pride in being one of only a handful of US presenters of this work.
