The Green Fuse: Paintings and Drawings by Laura Frankstone and Ippy Patterson

The Green Fuse: Paintings and Drawings by Laura Frankstone and Ippy Patterson

The Ackland Museum Store will open The Green Fuse: Paintings and Drawings by Laura Frankstone and Ippy Patterson, an exhibition of floral-themed art by two local artists, on Saturday, 30 August 2014.

The show’s title refers to the poem “The Force That through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower,” written by Dylan Thomas in 1933 when he was nineteen years old. At the time, Thomas was immersed in writing about the temporal processes of birth, death, and rebirth—topics appropriate to the lives of plants and flowers.

Artists and friends Laura Frankstone and Ippy Patterson have both devoted much of their artistic careers to the drawing of plants and flowers. While their work is stylistically different, their observation and deep appreciation of nature has enabled them both to infuse their work with great life and energy. The art on view in The Green Fuse ranges from loose floral sketches with wash to detailed botanical illustrations.

Laura Frankstone is a painter, illustrator, and award-winning art blogger.  Her work has been published in several books and magazines and will be included in the upcoming book Drawing 365: Tips and Techniques to Build Your Confidence and Skills by Katherine Tyrell (Northlight Books, December 2014).  Laura’s work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. An avid traveler, gardener, and sketcher, Laura lives with her family in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Ippy Patterson, an illustrator and film maker, grew up in a copper mining camp in northern Chile. Since attending the Rhode Island School of Design and graduating from Brown University in 1975, Ippy has been a freelance illustrator for such publications as the New York Times and McCall’s. She has illustrated several award-winning books and her art has been exhibited throughout the United States. Ippy lives in Chapel Hill with her husband and is currently at work writing and illustrating her Boogyman Memoirs.

The Green Fuse opens on Saturday, 30 August 2014, with a reception from 6:00-8:00 PM.

The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, 26 October 2014. All works on view are for sale and proceeds benefit the Ackland Art Museum. For more information, please contact the Ackland Museum Store at 919.962.0216.
