Hailed by The New Yorker as “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today,” Chapel Hill native Michelle Dorrance’s company features some of today’s best tap artists, including The Blues Project co-choreographers Derick K. Grant and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards. Bessie Award-winning Dorrance Dance honors tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamic context, not by stripping the form of its tradition but by pushing it, rhythmically, aesthetically and conceptually. Street, club and experimental dance forms awake to the sound of furious rhythms. Tap dance, America’s most long-standing indigenous jazz vernacular, is here to receive its due. Toshi Reagon and her band BIGLovely perform her original blues music created for the show.
