Preservation Chapel Hill

Baroque & Beyond

Baroque & Beyond – North Carolina produces period-music concerts under the nonprofit umbrella of  Preservation Chapel Hill. The series was launched in 2008 by Artistic Director Beverly Biggs at the invitation of Preservation Chapel Hill, which has a rich history of sponsoring musical performances.

Since 2008, Baroque & Beyond has earned the affection of its audience and the respect of its peers. The Chapel Hill series consists of three concerts per season, focusing on music of the baroque, classic, and early romantic eras. Period instruments and historical performances practices are a hallmark of the concerts, along with interesting and innovative programming. Having outgrown the original performance space at Preservation Chapel Hill’s headquarters (the Horace Williams House) and subsequently in some of Chapel Hill’s largest homes, performances are now held at Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

New York soprano Molly Quinn is much-beloved in her home town of Chapel Hill. She returns home for this program of French baroque music, featuring Monteclair’s cantata Pan & Syrinx. Also featured are Gail Schroeder, viola da gamba; Gesa Kordes, baroque violin; Rebecca Troxler, baroque flute; and Beverly Biggs, harpsichord. The program also includes Marais’s famous variations on La Folia for gamba and continuo - a tour de force for the viola da gamba.
