I have been working on this series of paintings for the past two years. They represent a departure from the earlier, more explicitly political work, and instead emphasize the more spiritual focus that also runs throughout all my work.
The earlier paintings refer to alternative planes of reality. This idea is expressed through symbolism including floating dresses and with representations of the natural world encompassing images from the bottom of the sea to the constellations in the sky. The later paintings have evolved into visionary landscapes of pathways, forests, rivers and architecture.
My paintings are conceived through an elaborate drawing process and are executed in acrylic on canvas or panels. I take my own photography and create a collage of visual impressions working from as many as ten photographs for a painting. This results in paintings characterized by the use of symbolic color, bold shapes, and strong linear qualities.
My new paintings remind us of the seasons of time in our lives. The paintings ask us to see ourselves tied to the rhythms of nature. The paintings concentrate and focus our attention on fleeting experiences such as ever changing patterns of light and shadow. I hope these paintings help us to renew our enthusiasm for things that have grown dull with familiarity. Painting teaches us to see and feel.
