Musical Conversation Evening & Art Exhibit at LIGHT Art+Design

AN EVENING OF MUSICAL CONVERSATIONS WITH
ALISON WEINER AND FRIENDS

LIGHT ART + DESIGN is pleased to present Alison Weiner of mahaloArts, joined by musicians extraordinaire Robbie Link and Beverly Botsford, in a one-night only improvised performance inspired by its current 4 Directions exhibit, featuring the work of Marguerite Jay Gignoux, A. Brooke Heuts, Harriet Hoover and Carolyn Nelson.  This is the first time LIGHT will serve as a venue for a public musical performance.

In April 2015, Alison led an improvising ensemble for the sold-out closing reception of MASKS AND MIRRORS at Cassilhaus Gallery in Chapel Hill, featuring the works of Mary Jane Rivers, Bryant Holsenbeck and Marcy Litle. The May 20th ensemble will take a similar approach, as the musicians bring their unique vocabularies into spontaneous conversation with each other. Live music in the exhibit hall deepens the experience of the visual art for all participants. The sketches are alive in the moment, and then they are gone, transformed into memories for those present. Unlike the physical art works, the process of the musical dialog itself is the result. This is the joy of improvisational music. The audience will be invited to participate in the conversations.

The performance will be held at LIGHT on Friday May 20th, 2016 at 8:00pm. A limited number of tickets are $20, available online at http://www.lightartdesign.com/shop/music or by calling 919-942-7077. LIGHT is located at 601 West Rosemary Street, Suite 110 (in the Greenbridge Building on the Merritt Mill Road side) in Chapel Hill.

LIGHT ART+DESIGN promotes the work of contemporary artists and the awareness of innovative, sustainable design. For more information, contact Sarah Blaine at (919) 924-7077. www.lightartdesign.com

mahaloArts is a Carrboro-based company whose mission is to facilitate, develop and present artistic endeavors of positive, constructive, and engaging manner that underscore gratefulness for being alive.  We emphasize improvised performance and exploration, which further our abilities to communicate and craft solutions that transcend cultural boundaries and celebrate our common humanity. Hey Guy

Fri, May 13, 2016

Doors: 8:00 pm / Show: 9:00 pm

Local 506, Chapel Hill, NC

Tickets: $7.00

Bold and memorable as their name, Hey Guy is a modern rock act with equal parts ferocity and finesse. Their catchy songs are cunningly layered, exhibiting a knack for uncanny melodies. From fierce riffs to sprawling atmospherics, their self-titled LP, multiple single releases and most recent EP (Hey Guy III) deliver a spectrum of innovative songs. Imagine if the Beach Boys jammed with Queens of the Stone Age and you've got a party courtesy of Hey Guy.

With a live show that blends composed musicianship amidst hilarious theatrics, Hey Guy has garnered popular acclaim in the New York City scene, conquering venues such as Blender Theater, The Mercury Lounge and Irving Plaza. On the net, their YouTube channel has a strong following, presenting an offbeat sense of humor within meticulously crafted concepts and some serious musicianship.

Their message is simple: "You're perfect! Disarm your fears and rejoice in your life."

Music on the Porch: Look Homeward
Hosted by The Center for the Study of the American South

Look Homeward is a band of brackish brethren hailing from the piedmont of North Carolina. Lee Anderson (guitar, vocals), Alex Bingham (upright bass), Evan Ringel (trombone, fiddle) and Wilson Greene IV (banjo) pair the Appalachian drawls and passionate picking of venerated field recordings with the soul tones of Atlantic beaches and boggy bayous. Marrying banjos with brass, the quartet celebrates the American South in a mingling of old and new, traditional yet surprising. Add honest folk songwriting and the result is music that just might sound like home, wherever you’re from.

Look Homeward’s first EP, The Hunger and the Ghost, was released in Fall 2013 and met with unexpected success. Their first full-length studio album was released in May 2015 and is available on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.
