The 2009 North Carolina Literary Festival

UNC Campus 
The FREE public festival, funded entirely by gifts and grants, is organized and sponsored by the libraries of UNC and N.C. State and Duke universities, with additional support from N.C. Central University. Held every other year, the location rotates among the three campuses. The festival will feature more than 100 authors representing all genres of books - distinguished local and national keynotes, North Carolina favorites, well-known Southern writers and emerging artists. The festival also features an extensive children's area with activities, author readings, performances, and mascots. For a complete schedule of events visit

UNC Journalism Exhibit at Wilson Library!
Wilson - Journalism ExhibitConsecrated to the Common Good: 100 Years of Journalism Education at UNC-Chapel Hill
Exhibit Runs Until January 31, 2010 
Items related to famous alumni including Charles Kuralt and Jeff MacNelly will be on view in this exhibit. The history of journalism education at UNC will also be told through documents, publications and photographs. Puzzling It Out: An Ackland-Kidzu Collaboration!

4:30 pm to 5:30 pm

What can you see? The artist Aldwyth makes images that require careful looking to figure them out. At the Ackland Art Museum, children will become detectives to determine what the artist is trying to say visually. At Kidzu, they'll create their own assemblages, combining two- and three- dimensional objects to create their own sculptures. Registration required and limited. Drawing in the Galleries at the Ackland!

Open Drawing Session for the community at the Ackland Art Museum. The session opens with a brief consideration of a single work of art followed by time to draw in a pre-selected gallery.  Bring paper and dry media (crayon, pencils, etc.). All levels are welcome and it's free! DRAWING FOR KIDS - for children ages 9 to 12, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Registration is required and limited. Free to members, $5 for non-members.  The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill is hosting a book signing of author Suzy Barile's new book entitled, Undaunted Heart: The True Story of a Southern Belle & a Yankee General. The book focuses on the true romance of Eleanor Swain and General Smith Atkins at the end of the Civil War in Chapel Hill. Barile is a descendent of the famous couple and adds a unique insight to story. Barile will be reading from her book and display artifacts of from the couples turbulent romance. The Preservation Society of Chapel Hill offers "Walk This Way", walking tours of Franklin Street every Sunday at 2:00 pm.  From the historic homes to the colorful characters to the great events, visitors will learn the history behind Chapel Hill's most famous-and infamous-street. Wolfe Painting by Gorsline

The Center for the Study of the American South will exhibit artist Douglas Gorsline's original drawings for the first illustrated edition (1947, Scribner's) of Thomas Wolfe's novel, "Look Homeward, Angel". The exhibition will feature more than 50 pen and brush drawings generously loaned by the North Carolina Collection at the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library at UNC. Almost Now: Cuban Art, Cinema, and Politics in the 1960s and 1970s!
August 29 - December 6, 2009
Featuring sixteen Cuban cinema posters recently given to the Ackland by eminent art historian, collector, and Carolina alumnus David Craven, Almost Now examines the central role that artists, filmmakers, and film audiences have played in Cuban cultural and political discourse since the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

Franklin Street Comes Alive! brings local musicians to downtown Chapel Hill to perform on the street on weekend evenings. Performers are located in front of the Bank of America Building (137 East Franklin Street), Bicycle Chain  (210 West Franklin Street), and the UNC ITS Building (440 West Franklin)

This partnership between the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and the Chapel Hill Mayor's Office intends to bring live music and performance outdoors to create a vibrant and lively atmosphere in the heart of our town. For more information visit  
West End Valet Parking is FREE! West End Logo
Spend the evening on the West End and take advantage of FREE Valet Parking six nights a week! Monday through Saturday - 5:00pm to 11:00pm. Courtesy Valet Parking is provided to patrons of participating businesses with a validated parking receipt. Downtown visitors enjoying other establishments can also use the valet service for a $5.00 charge. Drop cars off at the Valet Parking stand located in front of the UNC Information Technology building (440 West Franklin Street), near the West End Wine Bar. Parking is always FREE in Downtown Chapel Hill every Sunday!
