Homegrown Halloween in Downtown Chapel Hill Homegrown Halloween - Cat 

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? Homegrown Halloween is an effort to return the Halloween celebration on Franklin Street to its roots as a small town community gathering. The Town of Chapel Hill and the downtown community are committed to focusing on the safety of all downtown that night. There are restrictions in place with regards to parking, alcohol sales, and access; so if you plan to celebrate on Franklin Street - please read the Town's

Rediscover University Square 

Rediscover University Square, where unique shopping, dining and customer service are alive and well in downtown Chapel Hill!  Don't miss their kick-off to the holiday shopping season with a special event on Thursday, November 4 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. All stores will have merchandise on sale, carolers, and holiday decorations to put us all in the spirit. All can enter the Circle the Square contest, by visiting the many different shops and restaurants with a special map. Each store will verify customer visits and the map will be turned in to enter a drawing for a special prize pack of merchandise. For more information visit


Celebrate Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird Movie PosterAs Harper Lee's beloved novel To Kill a Mockingbird reaches its 50-year mark, join the Center for the Study of the American South for a celebratory screening and discussion on Thursday, October 28.
·5:00 PM - A screening of the film at the Varsity Theater, 123 E. Franklin St. Admission to the film will be free with a UNC One Card, $3 for the general public.
·7:15 PM - Discussion led by a panel of writers in the Varsity Theater: Lee Smith, Jill McCorkle, Randall Kenan, Minrose Gwin, and Jaki Shelton Green.
·8:00 PM to 9:00 PM - Reception with savories and sweets of the 1930's South at Ackland Art Museum. Attendance at the reception is free but requires an RSVP. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased at the Varsity box office or call 967-8665.  For more information please visit

"Scare-o-lina Skies" at Morehead Planetarium

"Scare-o-lina Skies," is a Halloween-themed version of Morehead's popular "Carolina Skies" star show! This special program is geared for adults and older teens on Friday & Saturday night.  Also back by popular demand, "Scare-o-lina Skies: Family Edition", a milder version of the show which is the perfect choice for elementary school-age children and their families on Saturday, October 30 at 3:30 PM. Spooky Fun at Kidzu Children's Museum

Kidzu gets into the Halloween spirit with a spooky and fun Halloween-themed Preschool Storytime at 10:30 AM for kids ages 3 to 6. Haunted Walking Tour of the Chapel Hill Cemetery

Voices from the Grave will dramatically bring back to life some of the most famous, and infamous, residents of the old Chapel Hill Cemetery. From former slaves, to World War II and Civil War soldiers, to victims of unsolved murders, the tour will invite guests to hear the stories of those who met untimely deaths or had tortured lives. Like the case of Rachel Crook who once ran a fish market on the corner of Merritt Mill Road and West Franklin Street, the current location of Crook's Corner Restaurant. She was murdered in 1951. The case has never been solved.
