The Tar Heels take on the East Carolina University Pirates this weekend. The violin, mandolin and guitars of Mandolin Orange and the guitar of Ryan Gustafson will waft across the lawn of the Center for the Study of the American South as they perform for this FREE public event. The performers will discuss the influence of the South on their music; whether they are inspired by other Southern musicians; and what makes the South fertile ground for creative expression. Ackland Art Museum is hosting an opening reception for Counterlives / Big Shots: Andy Warhol Polaroids / Enduring Likeness. Best known as a painter and filmmaker, Andy Warhol also was a prolific photographer. Bringing together moments of his art, work, and life, a new exhibition opening Oct. 2 at the Ackland will include about 250 Polaroids and 70 gelatin silver black-and-white prints that Warhol took between 1970 and 1987.  Please RSVP for the reception to or 919.843.3687.
