Election Day is Tuesday, November 8th. Polls are open from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
penny sales tax
On election day Orange County voters will have the opportunity to vote either 'for' or 'against' a ¼ Cent Sales and Use Tax. The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership Board of Directors has endorsed the referendum and here is why:
  • The proposed tax will raise $2.5 million in revenue per year, with 50% going towards capital needs for schools and 50% going towards economic development, imposed over a 10-year period.
  • Economic development county-wide will have a positive impact on downtown by drawing new residents and businesses who are attracted to our community.
  • The ¼ cent is not on gas, prescription drugs, or groceries.
  • The ¼ cent will help minimize the continual pressure to raise property taxes.
  • The ¼ cent allows Orange County to collect revenue from visitors and commuters.
  • The effective sales tax is already lower because the state rolled back the sales tax 1 cent starting July 1, 2011.
