Goodbye Meters, Hello New Parking Pay Stations!

New Parking Pay Stations Coming to Downtown Chapel Hill

New parking pay stations are being installed in downtown Chapel Hill, making parking more convenient to downtown visitors who will be able to pay with credit cards and mobile phones, as well as coins.

Last fall, the Town installed two pay stations during a three-month trial period and sought public input on the different pay station models. As a result of the feedback, the Town selected the Duncan VM Multi-Space Parking Meter. The rollout of the new stations should be completed by early July, replacing about 240 single space parking meters with 40 multi-space pay stations.

“Our new pay stations are environmentally friendly because they are solar-operated,” said Parking Superintendent Brenda Jones. “They also will not produce paper receipts, as part of our goal to reduce litter.”

One pay station will be installed for every eight to 10 parking spaces in most applications. When you leave your vehicle, take note of space number on the curb. At the pay station, key in the space number and pay the amount for your allotted time. The stations accept credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) as well as coins. Meters are enforced 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On-street metered parking is free after 6 p.m. daily and all day Sunday.

The pay stations are one of several improvements to parking in downtown Chapel Hill in the past two years, including the establishment of new parking lots on Basnight Lane (behind the Courtyard), a new parking lot signage system and a courtesy parking program that forgives the first on-street meter violation. Changes stem from recommendations from a Town of Chapel Hill citizens advisory committee and a parking improvement plan adopted in 2009 by the Council.
