Road Improvements & Temporary Closings

Church Street Closure

Church Street will be closed between W. Rosemary and W. Franklin streets as part of the 140 West Project starting at 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17. This closure is necessary to complete street-scape improvements, curb installation, and concrete paving that cannot be otherwise completed due to safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians alike. Additionally, the north side of the W. Franklin Street sidewalk adjacent to the worksite will be closed. A signed detour will be provided for motorists and pedestrians on-site.

This closure is scheduled to be complete at the end of the day on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. For more information, please contact Mike Taylor, Project Manager, at or 919-969-5083.

Widening Project for NC 86 / Columbia Street

Work has begun on a N.C. Department of Transportation project to widen and enhance a section of N.C. 86/South Columbia Street in Chapel Hill from Purefoy Road to Manning Drive. The 0.8-mile section of N.C. 86/South Columbia Street (just south of  UNC campus) will be widened to include a center turn lane and bus pullouts, improving safety and the flow of traffic in the area. Sidewalks and bike lanes will be added to both sides of the road, improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists and maintaining the character of Chapel Hill.  More information here.
