New Show at LIGHT Art+Design
On Saturday, June 9 from 6PM to 9PM LIGHT Art+Design will hold an Opening Reception for the Penland Artists Summer Show. The show runs until September 1 and features works by Penland artists, residents, students and educators: Meredith Brickell, Béatrice Coron, Dail Dixon, Leo Gaev, Celia Gray, Barbara McFadyen, Clarence Morgan, Kaola Phoenix, Tom Shields, Leigh Suggs, Stephanie Thompson, Mark Warren, Sarah West and others. Ackland Museum Store Exhibit 
Perspectives in Mentoring: The Paintings of Anthony Ulinski and Deneé Black continues in the gallery at the Ackland Museum Store.  This is the first in a series of shows focusing on the importance of mentoring in the fields of art and craft. Anthony Ulinski is an accomplished oil painter who has taught extensively at Penland among other well-respected schools. Deneé Black, a talented mixed media painter, has taken classes with Anthony and has been mentored by him for several years. The show features not only the cityscapes of both artists, but reflects the evolving nature of a mentoring relationship. Their work, while stylistically different, share structural lines, strong perspective, and bold color. The store will be open Friday, June 8th until 9PM. Show continues thru June 10. Visit  
Picnic on McCorkle Place
The shadiest spot downtown is McCorkle Place, next to Morehead Planetarium. It's the grassy gateway to the campus waiting for a summer picnic or lazy afternoon nap ...(um, break from work)! 
Drawing in the Galleries
On Saturday, 9 June, 10AM to 12PM  join Amanda Hughes, the Ackland's director of external affairs, as she leads participants in a creative exploration of a particular object in the Museum's collection. Bring paper and dry media (crayon, pencils, etc.). All levels are welcome. Free and open to the public. DRAWING FOR TWEENS - from 10:30 to 12PM invites 10- to 13-year-olds to look at selected works in the Ackland's galleries and identify techniques that the artists used to make them. Gallery teachers demonstrate and teach technical skills, which participants can then apply to their own artistic creations. Free to members | $5 non-members. Support Kidzu with Your Vote!
Thanks to a program sponsored by Chase and LivingSocial called "Mission: Small Business," your support could translate into a $250,000 grant for KIDZU!
