Underground Printing Opens New Location on Franklin Street on Campus in Chapel Hill

Campus screenprinter brings a fresh take on custom printing & University of North Carolina licensed apparel.

The Franklin St area of Chapel Hill has a new look this fall, in more ways than one.  Underground Printing opened the doors of its newest location in the heart of the campus business district. The store, located at 133 E. Franklin Street next to Coldstone and kitty corner from Carolina Coffee Shop, is the company’s first University of North Carolina campus area location and the first store in the state of North Carolina. The space had been formerly occupied by Chapel Hill Sportswear.

Underground Printing’s approach to custom imprinted apparel is technology-driven and customer service oriented. Store manager and recent UNC graduate Elizabeth Flake is excited to bring a new model of custom printing to the campus community. “I’m thrilled to be opening the UGP store in Chapel Hill. It’s great to become a part of the vibrant business community here and provide a better option for fast, affordable, and high-quality custom screenprinting and embroidery to students & businesses.”  With technology like a group payment system, online customer portals, digital art proofs, and easy online payment options, Underground Printing is pushing the custom printing business into the modern age. “We want to make the custom printing process as easy, transparent, fast, and affordable as possible for customers. Historically screenprinting & embroidery has been anything but, and we’re trying to change that with our newest location in Chapel Hill,” noted co-owner Rishi Narayan.

The company has a similarly fresh take on collegiate retail apparel that it offers in the store and online at Underground Printing has shirked the traditional boxy bookstore t-shirt, opting instead for fashionable styles, better fits, and an ever-changing array of designs that reflect the spirit of the campus community. The company also seeks to offer unique and one-of-a-kind products only available through Underground Printing. “Students and Alumni shouldn’t have to buy the same shirts & designs they bought when they were freshman, year after year. Fashions evolve quickly, new materials and products are constantly getting popular, and the campus community has something new to say. The standard bookstore-style t-shirt just doesn’t cut it these days,” said co-owner Ryan Gregg. Underground Printing’s designs include officially licensed UNC merchandise, as well as UGP originals that celebrate the North Carolina lifestyle and North Carolina state pride.

Underground Printing is located at 133 E. Franklin Street.  The store is open 9 AM - 9 PM Sunday - Thursday and 9 AM-11 PM  Friday & Saturday. Items can be purchased online at  For more information,
