There’s something new brewing at the Triangle’s oldest brewpub. Carolina Brewery is now offering a new line of small batch beers exclusively at its Chapel Hill location, doubling the number of its award-winning beers on tap to twelve.
“We’re excited to offer a variety of fresh, local handcrafted beers for our customers,” says Carolina Brewery owner Robert Poitras. “Where else in the area can you choose from twelve different beers brewed on-site? This expansion in Chapel Hill also allows our brewers more artistic freedom to try new recipes and bring new flavors to our beer line-up.”
The small batch beers will be available for a limited time only and include new offerings and old favorites, sold by the pint, pitcher, growler or mini keg in Chapel Hill only (current line-up below). When one batch is finished another boutique beer will take its place at the tap, making selection and offerings an ever-changing experience for beer fans.
In addition to these new beers, Carolina Brewery will continue to offer its five core brand beers (Sky Blue Golden Ale, Copperline Amber Ale, Flagship IPA, Oatmeal Porter and Firecracker Pale Ale) daily plus their popular seasonal brews (Downtown Trolley Brown, Oktoberfest, Santa’s Secret and Bullpen Pale Ale) for a limited time.
The small batch beers will be brewed and served exclusively in Chapel Hill as the Franklin Street brewery is ideally suited to brew these boutique beers in its 10 barrel tanks. The larger Pittsboro brewery will produce the core and seasonal lines, including all wholesale beer to accounts throughout the Carolinas and into Tennessee and Virginia.
Currently in its 18th year of operation, and as the Triangle’s oldest brewpub, Carolina Brewery is a Chapel Hill institution. Stop in and see what’s on tap!
Small Batch Beers Currently on Tap at Carolina Brewery:
Alter Ego Altbier
This beer is the “alter ego” of most German style beers we drink which are pale cold fermented lagers. Altbier is a rich and fruity, warm fermented brown ale. The word “Alt” simply means old and refers to the time before the rise of lager brewing when ales were the dominant brews of Germany. Alc:5.9%
Franklin Street Lager
Our lager, made with an all malt recipe is a Bohemian – style pilsner beer. It contains gentle bitterness, soft maltiness and is hopped true to style with Czech Saaz hops. This clear golden beer style, which utilizes bottom-fermenting yeast, was developed in 1842 in the town of Pilsen at a time when all other beers were cloudy. Alc: 5.1%
Funky Monk Ale
Centuries ago the Trappist Monks of Belgium and the Netherlands introduced this flavorful style of beer to the world and they have been brewing it ever since. By incorporating the finest European malts and authentic Begian yeast, we have created a dark malty brew. This Belgian Dubbel ale starts smooth with a heavenly finish. It’s a sin not to try it. Alc: 8.5%
Old North State Stout
Stout began as a porter style beer in London England and originally described a beer that was stronger and drier than the sweeter porters were. Old North State Stout is made with roasted, pale and caramel malts plus American and English hops. Together they combine to make a full flavored ale with notes of dark chocolate. Alc: 5.4%
Looks and pours like a classic stout with pitch black color, hints of rich dark chocolate and a beautiful tan head. Breathe in the aroma and you will recognize that this smooth drinking ale is hopped with a tasty blend of American hops from the Pacific Northwest. This blend of hops imparts subtle tropical and citrus notes. In the end, we add more hops to this beer in the fermenter to impart that true to style American IPA aroma. Alc: 7.7%
Carolina Brewery Tripel
This Tripel style ale is rich, malty and strong. It pours a beautiful deep golden color with a bright white collar of foam. Saaz hops add spicy pepper notes to the aroma and nicely balance the fruity esters produced by the unique Belgian yeast strain. This beer follows with a nice honey-like flavor on the palate and finishes with a smooth, gentle warming of the tongue. Alc: 8.0%
