NIGHT LIGHTS: A Family New Year's Eve Downtown /EVENT IS NOW FULL

12/30/13: This event is full! NIGHT LIGHTS will have four 'countdowns' so all can enjoy the festivities! If you are already registered, you will receive a wristband when you arrive on Tuesday evening that will determine which "countdown" you will attend.  See you tomorrow!

Now kids can enjoy ringing in the new year too at NIGHT LIGHTS; a family New Year's Eve event on Tuesday, December 31 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in downtown Chapel Hill at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. NIGHT LIGHTS offers FREE family-friendly activities, performances, refreshments, and a kids' countdown under the stars in the fulldome theater to ring in the new year! For information visit

 FREE activities include:

  • Make-and-take crafts like LED light-up jewelry, decorative Wish Stars, and constellation viewers showing the stars currently in the night sky.
  • Studio A DanceArts performing illuminated, interactive dances.
  • A star-filled countdown for the kids in the fulldome theater at 5:45 p.m. that all can participate in.
  • Refreshments and goodie bags for all, while supplies last.
