TODAY - Thursday, February 7 at 6PM, join Sudie Rakusin for a discussion of how her life and work have evolved to become reflections of each other. Although Sudie was born in a city and had little exposure to animals growing up, today she includes animals in nearly every piece of art she creates.

Celebrate Love Under the Stars!
It's the most unique Valentine's tradition you'll ever experience- the special star show "Carolina Skies: Valentine Edition" explores the legends of love told by ancient cultures through constellations. Shows on Thursday, February 14 at 7:30PM and 9PM. Tickets available at the door, beginning 30 minutes before showtime: $7.25/adult, $6/student or senior. This program is recommended only for ages 18 and older.

Music and the Global American South Conference
Aiming to bring together a broad audience to share current research on the culture, meaning, and practices surrounding music in and from the Global American South; this two-day conference on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 also features two performances. The Conference will consider musical import/export, musical manifestation of changing populations, musical meaning contextualized by regional history and contemporary politics, and musical transgressions of boundaries or borders in region, style, genre, and identity. 
More Love Everywhere Workshop
TODAY -Thursday, February 7 from 4PM to 5:30PM kids will discover how artists show love for their family and friends in the Ackland exhibition More Love: Art, Politics, and Sharing since the 1990s. Starting off at the Ackland, kids will examine works by Dario Robleto and others, looking at some of the special materials and processes artists can use to demonstrate their feelings. Kids will then go to the Kidzu Children's Museum studio nearby to make a cool collage about someone they love to share on Valentine's Day. $5 per child. Ed Kerwin, executive director for OWASA (Orange Water and Sewer Authority), will talk about how we use -- and reuse -- water in our community TODAY- Thursday, February 7 at 6PM. On the 1st Thursday of every month, Carolina Science Cafe hosts an expert who gives a short presentation on a relevant scientific topic followed by a question and answer session. demonstrations. The very best circus-style food. Morehead Planetarium and Science Center presents its second annual Cirque des Sciences on Friday, February 8 from 7:30 pm to midnight. This evening event for adults ages 21 and up combines the artistry and fun of the circus with amazing science demonstrations! Cirque des Sciences also features fine food and drinks from some of the areas's most popular dining establishments and a silent auction, followed by dessert and dancing under the stars of the GlaxoSmithKline Fulldome Theater. Proceeds from the event support programs which provide high-quality science education experiences to nearly 170,000 guests each year, including more than 75,000 K-12 students. Tickets are $85 each or $150 for two.

Drawing Workshops at Ackland
Drawing for Tweens: Saturday, February 9 from 10:30AM to 12PM;10- to 13-year-olds are invited to look at selected works at the Ackland. Gallery teachers lead participants in both drawing from artworks on display and creating their own original art. Materials are provided. Free for members, $5 for non-members. Drawing in the Galleries: Saturday, February 9 from 10AM to 12PM; Amanda Hughes (the Ackland's Director of External Affairs) leads participants in a creative exploration of a particular object in the Ackland's collection. Bring paper and dry media (crayon, pencils, etc.). All levels are welcome. Free.

At Ackland: Gregory Sale's Love for Love includes a trough of metal buttons imprinted with love-inspired texts written by individuals from the Chapel Hill whose voices are less-often heard. Visitors are invited to participate in the piece by taking a button and looking for signs posted on Franklin St. with other Love for Love texts. Through their circulation, Sale's buttons are intended to foster dialogue, promote awareness of less visible segments of society, and invite tolerance, making the Museum what Sale calls a "space of service."  
Celebrate with Carolina Brewery
The Triangle's oldest brewery has turned 18! Carolina Brewery is celebrating this milestone with a series of events from through Saturday, February 9, highlighted by the introduction of a special limited edition Anniversary Ale and a Mardis Gras party featuring the band The Bright Mines on Saturday, February 9 at West End Public. Join the Chapel Hill Preservation Society for a stroll down beautiful Franklin Street on Sunday, February 10 at 2PM. Learn about historic homes and the famous - or infamous - inhabitants. Tour begins at the Horace Williams House and lasts 90 minutes. $5 suggested donation per person.

On Monday, February 11 Goodfellows, located at 149 1/2 East Franklin Street, is featuring a free BBQ dinner with fixings provided in part by Bart's Old North State BBQ and a night of fundraising BINGO games. The games begin at 10PM. Prizes for winners. All money from the sales of BINGO cards will go towards providing Valentines' Day gift bags for the residents of the Carolina Meadows Nursing Home in Chapel Hill. The facility is home to almost 80 residents. Each patron to Goodfellows has the opportunity to sponsor a gift bag and personalize a Valentine to a resident at the nursing home.

Performances at Memorial Hall
Friday, February 8 at 8PM: The Carolina Chocolate Drops have achieved one of the most impressive feats in contemporary music, creating an authentic body of work steeped in the Piedmont blues tradition while also managing to reinvent the very sound they set out to honor.For this performance,they are joined on stage by Vusi Mahlasela, a South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist. Saturday, February 9 at 8PM: Singing, songwriting, clawhammer banjo player Abigail Washburn presents very contemporary versions of traditional Appalachian-style folk songs.The performance features songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kai Welch, known for his indie rock sensibilities and classical training. They are joined by Wu Fei, an internationally acclaimed master of the guzheng, the Chinese zither. 
Carnevale di Venezia
Celebrate the mystique, music, food, and fun of Carnevale in Venice to support the cats and kittens of the Goathouse Refuge on Saturday, February 16, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Varsity Theatre. Featuring live entertainment The Dance Cure, Commedia dell'Arte,and Mebanesville with music and song from Italy. Wear a costume and win a prize! Taste Carnevale!
