Voices from Tobe at Wilson Library
Tuesday, October 21 at 5 pm: In the 1930s, few children's books featured realistic depictions of African Americans. But Tobe, published by UNC Press in 1939 and based on the daily lives of children from Hillsborough and an African American community outside Greensboro, offered a more true-to-life portrayal. Benjamin Filene, Director of Public History at UNC-Greensboro, will serve as moderator as several who appeared in Tobe and their descendants share their memories in a program marking the book's 75th anniversary. Reception begins at 5pm in the North Carolina Collection Gallery, Wilson Library. Program presented as part of the Click! Triangle Photography Festival, www.clicktrianglephoto.org
