Bare Theatre Brings Shakespeare to Varsity Theatre

BARE THEATRE BRINGS UNIQUE BRAND OF SHAKESPEARE TO HISTORIC MOVIE THEATER IN CHAPEL HILL

From Bare Theatre Reports: The Wherefore: Shakespeare in Raleigh series makes a stop in Tar Heel country!  Bare Theatre continues its tenth season with its 21st Shakespeare title the comedy, Measure for Measure. Though the play is chocked full of humor and innuendo, it is referred to as a comedy by Renaissance standards because it does not have a tragic ending. Performances in downtown Chapel Hill at The Varsity Theatre on March 19-21, 26-28, and April 2-4. All shows at 7:30 pm.

Measure for Measure is anything but dated, however. Often cited as one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays,” it examines moral questions that reveal the famed playwright was very much ahead of his time. Measure deals with very contemporary themes of sex and desire, and raises questions about the separation of church and state taboo during the Renaissance.

The central plot concerns an indecent proposal by the acting head of state, Angelo. Strongly attracted to the nun, Isabella, he propositions her in exchange for sparing the life of her brother, who was sentenced to execution because of an outofwedlock pregnancy.

Bare Theatre’s new Education Director, Beverly Schieman, seeks to give audiences an intimate, moving experience of this classic work. She transports the setting to 1920’s Paris a scene of exploding artistic and sexual expression against a historic period of repression and prohibition.

The Varsity Theatre, originally built in 1927, provides the perfect venue for this production. Bare Theatre will integrate backdrops that fit the silent era film period in the cozy confines of the theater.

Bare Theatre is a Raleighbased mobile theatre company that has received acclaim from publications around the Triangle. Two of its 2014 productions, Let Them Be Heard and Coriolanus, were named among the 10 Best of the Year by Indy Week. Bare is known for its minimalist, highenergy, physical approach to the works of Shakespeare and historical texts.

This production is part of the Wherefore: Shakespeare in Raleigh series and is sponsored by the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership.
