Dream Up Downtown Walks

Hidden in Plain Sight Tour Description

Every city is filled with thousands of hidden features that contribute to a sense of vibrancy and place. These physical elements are consciously designed to maximize our enjoyment and use of our spaces, but every day we walk past them, over them, under them, without even noticing their brilliant design. Have you ever wondered why manhole covers have the patterns they do? What about the shape of the bicycle rack you use every day? The width of the sidewalk outside your favorite coffee shop? Walk with us as we explore the almost invisible physical design features of downtown that are essential to the functioning of Chapel Hill.

Our Public Spaces Tour Description

Great public spaces are essential to the success of our cities. Downtown Chapel Hill and Carrboro have a number of well-known spaces that bring residents together and foster a sense of community and comradery. Our towns also have a number of lesser known, barely used spaces that hold great potential. Walk with us as we discover these plazas, courtyards, green spaces, and alleyways, and explore what makes them successful, or underutilized. We’ll discuss the varied histories, designs, and uses of these spaces and brainstorm ideas for increasing the number and quality of our public spaces for maximum community benefit.
