ART & CULTURE - FedEx Global Education Center Exhibit
Wed - Jul 01 -- Wed - Oct 07
July 1 - Oct. 31 kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. For this exhibition of portraits, artist Kip Fulbeck traveled the country photographing Hapa of all ages and walks of life. Once a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for "half," the word Hapa has been embraced as a term of pride for many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Rim ancestry. Fulbeck's work seeks to address in words and images the one question that Hapa are frequently asked: What are you? By pairing portraits of Hapa unadorned by make-up, jewelry and clothing along with their handwritten statements on who they are, Fulbeck has produced powerful yet intimate expressions of beauty and identity. "kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa" is organized by the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California. It is supported in part by the James Irvine Foundation and is part of the Global Education Distinguished Speakers Series. ART & CULTURE - BOOK Release Party at the Cave
Fri - Jul 03
Friday, July 3 10:00 pm Chapel Hill’s legendary tavern The Cave (452 ½ W. Franklin Street) has surely never hosted a book release party before, but this will all change Friday, July 3, 2009, when author Nic Brown celebrates the release of his debut novel Floodmarkers, with music from special guests Snüzz (of Ben Folds’ touring band, International Orange, etc.), Andy Ware (from Hobex), and Sam Frazier.Brown, whose work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in The New York Times and The Harvard Review, is an author and musician living in Chapel Hill. “In Brown’s hip, assured debut,” says Publisher’s Weekly of Floodmarkers (out July 1 from Counterpoint Press), “a series of vignettes adds up to a keen portrait of a small North Carolina town. It’s September 21, 1989, in Lystra, N.C., and Hurricane Hugo is bearing down on residents and visitors alike… Think Winesburg, Ohio simultaneously pared down and amped up, read to the sound of a jangly Strat.” During the evening (which starts at 10 PM), Snüzz and friends will perform between Brown’s readings, at times accompanied by Brown himself who, in addition to writing, has had a long career as a drummer (with acts Ben Lee, Athenaeum, Longwave, and others). For more information please visit; www.caverntavern.com, www.nicbrown.net, www.myspace.com/snuzz, www.counterpointpress.com.
