To manage public safety and traffic impacts, the Town of Chapel Hill has permitted night construction work to occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.Monday through Thursday through July 28.
Regular construction is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday(sometimes Sunday) from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Construction schedules may change due to weather.
The night work will not occur every day, although the subcontractor has been given a broad window in which to complete its work as quickly as possible. Night work can be expected three to four times per week during the busiest part of the construction, depending on weather. A schedule of the night work will be posted online at www.townofchapelhill.org/carolinasquareprojectupdates.
The first night work is scheduled to take place Wednesday, Jan. 6. Work will begin during the day and could extend beyond 9 p.m.
West Franklin Street near the
Church Street intersection will be reduced from four lanes down to two between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.Wednesday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 8 for work on a water line. Traffic in both directions will be maintained the entire time.
Beginning next week, the sidewalk on the south side of West Franklin Street-near the construction-will be closed to people who walk. Detour signs will direct people across Franklin Street where travel will not be impacted.
Sixty large concrete pours are estimated to be required for the project by Lithko Contracting Inc., a subcontractor working for General Contractor Northwood Ravin that is overseeing the construction. In addition to noise, the pours will create truck traffic estimated at between 25 and 65 truck trips to and from the concrete plant. The trucks will be traveling from Argos Ready Mix in Durham along Interstate 40 to SR 15/501 to Franklin Street.
Noise that can be expected during the work include large trucks traveling up and down Franklin Street, concrete trucks idling in line waiting to pour concrete, back-up beeping on trucks getting in place to pour (10-15 seconds at a time), concrete pumping trucks, and large trowel machines (which are about as loud as a lawn mower), as well as the heavy machinery like dump trucks and front-end loaders and small equipment like nail guns
, hammers and power tools.
Carolina Square will include one 11-story and two five-story buildings with about 246 apartment units, 159,000 square feet of office space, and 42,000 square feet of retail space. The project will have landscaped green space within an urban park including public art and structured parking decks with 880 total spaces. Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017.
